Growing up in a household where both parents practiced medicine, I listened with awe as
they recited human anatomy with spit-fire intensity. They listed symptoms for thousands of
diseases until their diagnosis became melodic. Their passion for medicine sparked my
fascination with this incredible, diverse field. In fact, instead of requesting bedtime stories to fall
asleep, I begged to hear about the most interesting cases they’d seen that day. Medicine became a
comfort.
Medicine’s appeal only grew as I got older, and my father began taking me to his surgical
clinics. This first-hand experience of medicine was captivating. Watching as my father and his
co-workers precisely and attentively performed surgeries, I felt that sense of comfort come back
to me. At that moment, I knew medicine was my destiny.
The niche areas of medicine and the vast unknown reaches within this field fascinate me.
I’ve been lucky enough to conduct original research on the convergence of narcissism and social
media addiction. This research introduced me to new branches of medicine that I hope to learn
more about, like psychiatry. My research experience furthered my interest in the evolving field
of medicine, allowing me to realize that I can pursue a career that combines my interests in
medicine and research.
The altruistic core of medicine is another reason it’s the perfect field for me. The
experience of gaining knowledge and utilizing it to save lives is thrilling. The attributes of
medical professionals are something I’m familiar with, such as calmness under pressure,
emotional intelligence, and leadership. My experiences as the captain and president of clubs and
sports teams throughout high school have allowed me to develop leadership skills essential to the
medical field. Likewise, these leadership roles have taught me the importance of communication
and ensuring that teammates and collaborators are comfortable relaying their thoughts and
opinions. Pursuing a medical career is so much more than processing information. A career in
medicine will call upon my interpersonal skills, leadership abilities, and remaining calm in
intense situations.
I’m certain that a career in medicine will provide me with fulfillment like no other
occupation. By combining both altruism and constant learning, medicine is undoubtedly the
career path for me.
