Amanda – Ian Hacking’s Moving Targets: Kinds of People

  • presents 2 key things: ‘making up people’ and ‘looping effect’
  • gives 5 different aspects; classification, individuals, institutions, knowledge, experts
  • When identifying individuals, we have classifications based on knowledge that are utilized in institutions and supported by experts. This changes over time, attributing to the cultural narrative, when new knowledge is presented. This forces people to adjust to new classifications, changing the target, i.g. “looping effect”. Sometimes, scientists will create new groups of people, i.g. “making up people”.
  • obviously influences people, specifically in the medical field
    • different topics can look at individuals with different medical disorders (i.g. DID)
  • questions: What do people who exhibit new symptoms/new “knowledge” do when this information is presented?
  • examples: ancient civilizations hierarchies, DID
